The SMSL SU-1 had some really positive reviews, and since it's only $80 I figured I'd give it a try. To my surprise I can hear a significant improvement; it's not 'night and day', but definitely better IMO, especially in the bass detail. So I just found out that I have to use either the amp's 'Pure Direct' or 'CD Direct' mode for the DAC to work.. Fatal crash on 435 today
