I use Transtints quite a bit. There are at least three ways to use them. First, cut with distilled water, and use as a water dye on raw wood. Raise the grain first, and sand back out by hand. This is less work than you think. Second, combine with alcohol, and use as a dye on raw wood.

Using the liquid TranTint, 1 ounce makes a "normal" strength dye in about 1 quart of water. For this I would go a lot less, maybe 1/4 - 1/3 ounce in a quart. Each wood reacts a bit differently, so you definately have to experiment. The transtint cherry is much too red for my taste. I rarely stain or tint to try to produce an imitation cherry or other wood.The product can be top-coated with finish when the wood feels and looks dry – meaning, it reverts to a matte appearance and feels dry to the touch. Under most “normal” conditions, allow 1-2 hours for water reduced dyes and 30-45 minutes for alcohol or alcohol/lacquer thinner reduction. If you are unsure – allow 5-6 hour.
