The Mixol dyes also available from Woodcraft.com are more vibrant in color when applied diluted with lacquer thinner. The dyes are all real cheap and woodcraft.com has test boards of various species available as well; try some experiments before actually getting on that body.
Most wood dye products are compatible with water based sealers. I used a product called Transtint. It’s one of my favorite dye products. I’ve used a Keda Wood Dye product in the past but the Transtint is still my favorite. I use Transtints quite a bit. There are at least three ways to use them. First, cut with distilled water, and use as a water dye on raw wood. Raise the grain first, and sand back out by hand. This is less work than you think. Second, combine with alcohol, and use as a dye on raw wood.
Using the liquid TranTint, 1 ounce makes a "normal" strength dye in about 1 quart of water. For this I would go a lot less, maybe 1/4 - 1/3 ounce in a quart. Each wood reacts a bit differently, so you definately have to experiment. I would use no coarser than 220, with 320 being a more forgiving.TransTint Dyes can be added to a wide variety of finishing products like waxes and glues. The following list illustrates the unique uses for this product. Add to waxes to make a one step colored wax/stain for use on decorative objects and turnings. The transtint cherry is much too red for my taste. I rarely stain or tint to try to produce an imitation cherry or other wood.The product can be top-coated with finish when the wood feels and looks dry – meaning, it reverts to a matte appearance and feels dry to the touch. Under most “normal” conditions, allow 1-2 hours for water reduced dyes and 30-45 minutes for alcohol or alcohol/lacquer thinner reduction. If you are unsure – allow 5-6 hour.

Dec 26, 2015 · Put the tint in the finish, rather than apply it as a stain. In terms of the color mix, you are right that TransTint's Vintage Amber doesn't look at all like old nitro lacquer to me. It's much too yellow and fake looking. A '60's Fender neck with aged nitro lacquer is really a dull tan-amber shade, not yellow at all.
